  • EURO TOOL is known for producing innovative and quality jewelry making tools and supplies. With this specialty crimping tool, you don't need as much pressure on the crimp beads as you may have used with other pliers. Too much pressure can damage the tips of crimping pliers, and may cause the crimp to cut through beading cable. Pliers eventually wear out and may break. Rings & Things backs these crimp pliers with a six month warranty. When handled without excessive pressure, they last much longer. To use crimp pliers, string desired pattern, add crimp bead and finishing finding (jump ring, split ring, bullion or wire protector), then use the crimper section (1) of the crimp pliers to secure the stringing cable. (Best results are achieved when the two cable pieces are positioned on either side of the center dimple.) Use the rounder section (2) for final shaping. This gives you a compact, rounded crimp bead, which (if desired) can be hidden inside large-hole bead, a crimp cover, or even a fold-over bead tip. • Using a steel hammer on steel stamps, can damage (or even shatter!) your metal stamps, and is likely to bounce and give you the dreaded double impression. This is why we recommend always using brass hammers to hit steel stamps. Brass is a softer metal than steel, so don't worry when your brass hammer head gets dented (this is normal). • Red creek jasper beads are also known as Chinese picasso beads, reed picasso beads, and red cherry creek jasper beads. While these stunning semiprecious beads offer wonderful patterns in shades of rusty red, ochre, taupe and gray, the name is descriptive. Red creek jasper isn't an actual jasper, but a softer gemstone which should be treated with care. Mineralogical testing has not yet determined the chemical makeup of these gemstone beads. Nevertheless, their unique mix of warm and cool tones pairs well with both copper and silver, making these beads very versatile. Red creek jasper is said to be named after a stream that runs through the area of China where the gemstone was discovered. • Basic Loops The loop size will depend on how much wire you leave past the end of your beads, and around which part of your pliers you bend the loop. A good loop size is usually about 1/3 of the way from the tip of your pliers, with about 8mm of wire. Use round needle-nose pliers. If using an eye pin, decide which way you want the loop to go - the same direction as the premade loop on the other end, or 90º off. Keep this direction in mind as you bend the rest of the wire. Cut off any excess wire (we suggest retaining 8mm above the top of your beads). Grip the pin just above the top bead (at the arrow above), and bend the wire sharply toward you. Grasp the tip of the wire with pliers, and bend smoothly away from you, around the pliers. Wrapped Loops Use chain-nose pliers to grasp the wire just above the top of the bead. Use your fingers to bend the wire sharply over the top of the pliers, at a 90° angle. You should have 2-3mm of straight wire between the bead and the bend. Use round-nose pliers to grasp a spot just above the bend, and use your fingers to smoothly bend the wire all the way around the tip of the pliers. Now use pliers to grasp the wire firmly across the loop. Use your fingers or chain-nose pliers to carefully wrap the wire around the stem. For best control, experts recommend you break this step into a series of half wraps. Trim excess with flush cutters. • How to insert jeweler's saw blades: 1. Loosen one screw and insert a single blade with the teeth pointing outward and down (toward the handle) between the layers of metal. Tighten screw. Tip: If the teeth are too fine to see, gently run your thumb along the blade to figure out which way to point the blade. 2. Adjust frame to appropriate length for your blade. 3. Loosen the other screw. Brace the handle of frame against your hip or ribs and push frame against a sturdy table or wall. The purpose is to slightly curve the frame ends toward each other. Insert blade and tighten screw. Release the pressure on the frame, and flick the blade. If it makes a high, taut "ping!" then it's good. If it makes a low, flat "thunk", try again. • The technique of making powder glass and other recycled-glass beads by hand has been used in Africa for centuries. First, molds are created out of clay. Glass is chosen by color and crushed by hand into a material called the "fritt." For recycled glass beads, the glass isn't always crushed completely into a powder. The molds are often dipped in water and treated with kaolin clay to prevent sticking. A cassava stalk is often placed in the center of each mold and the rest of the mold is filled in with the "fritt." When fired, the stalks burn away leaving a hole in each bead. The molds are baked in a kiln hot enough to make the glass fuse together. From experience the beadmakers know how long to fire the molds, and can judge the temperature by the color of the flame. After firing the molds are removed. The beadmaker uses an awl in one hand while moving the mold with the other hand, spinning the gather of glass around to shape it. They then flip it over to shape the other side. Shaping and polishing is also done on a stone using sand and water. Beads are sometimes oiled to bring out their natural shine. Finally, it's off to the market. See Related Products links (below) for similar items and additional jewelry-making supplies that are often used with this item. It's strong, lightweight, slightly flexible, and remarkably hypoallergenic. This combination makes it popular for eyeglass frames as well as jewelry. Tortoiseshell has been used in jewelry and hair accessories for over 2,000 years. Instead of knotting, finish the ends with crimp beads. Kink resistant: the higher the strand count, the better the resistance. 7-strand is similar to other brands of tigertail but has a smoother coating, and 19-strand is even more supple than 7-strand. Beadalon 49 Strand is the softest and most flexible of all Beadalon varieties. For best durability use the largest diameter that fits your beads, and the largest number of strands (7, 19 or 49) that fit your budget. Beadalon does not stretch, even with heavy beads. Great for crystal necklaces, gemstones, handmade glass beads, delicate seed beads, freshwater pearls, and anything that you want to last for decades. For help choosing the perfect size of crimp beads for each size of Beadalon, see Crimps & Cable Size Chart. • A shimmery stone with unusual properties, kyanite can become the sparkle in a necklace or the spark plug in an engine. This aluminum silicate is a polymorph with andalusite and sillimanite, meaning it shares the same chemistry, but has a different crystal structure. Kyanite is commonly a deep blue, similar to sapphire, and is named from the Greek word kyanos for "dark blue." The color is not always uniform; it can be blotchy or streaky. The crystals are transparent to translucent, and are found in long blades or columns. Kyanite forms during regional metamorphism under elevated temperatures and pressures, in rocks such as gneiss and schist. It is also found in kimberlites. While most minerals have just one hardness, kyanite has a range of 4.5-6.5; the hardness varies depending on which way the stone is scratched (because kyanite's crystals are so long and thin). This gemstone has perfect cleavage lengthwise and good cleavage in a second direction. Therefore, kyanite is characterized by its blue color, differing hardnesses, perfect cleavage and bladed crystal form. Kyanite is seldom faceted due to difficulties in cutting, and remains an unusual collector's gem.Little historical information is available on kyanite, but it has been mined around the world for at least a century. At one time, French jewelers extensively used the name sappare when referring to kyanite; this was the result of an error by a mineralogist from Geneva. The mineralogist H.B. Saussure Jr. reportedly misread a label attached to a specimen thought to be sapphire. Despite recognition of the mistake, the name "sappare" became widespread, and that name is still occasionally heard when referring to kyanite. Please see the Related Products links below for similar items, and more information about this stone.
