  • The name apatite is quite appropriate, considering this mineral makes up the teeth in all vertebrate animals (and teeth are used to satisfy one's appetite!). In fact, it comprises more than 60% of the bones and teeth in humans, fish, birds, cows, and even mammoths and dinosaurs. Apatite is a calcium phosphate that is typically green, but also can be blue, yellow, reddish-brown, violet, yellow-green ("asparagus stone"), colorless or multicolored. Its name comes from the Greek word apate, meaning "to deceive," as apatite is deceivingly similar to more-valuable minerals like olivine, beryl, peridot and topaz. Apatite is actually three different minerals, depending on the predominance of either fluorine, chlorine or the hydroxyl group. These minerals are therefore called fluorapatite, chlorapatite and hydroxylapatite. However, since it is difficult to distinguish among them, they are usually classified as a single mineral. The majority of apatite on the market is fluorapatite, the most common member.Apatite precipitates (condenses) very rapidly, forming tiny crystals that replace the muscles, blood vessels and other tissues in ancient animals. Its small crystal size means apatite can preserve delicate details of the fossilized animals' structure, providing a wealth of information for researchers. This corresponds nicely with metaphysical theory, which holds that apatite can stimulate the thoughts and ideas, and help people maintain focus, learn, concentrate effectively and think clearly. Psychics use the stone to open the third eye and bring revelations closer. Many also say it brings love, harmony and peace. Healers say it is helpful for fighting viruses and controlling weight gain. • Spinel forms in a wide variety of colors: black, blue, red, violet, green, brown, pink, white and colorless, and is most famous for its brilliant red variety that closely resembles ruby. Spinel was named in 1779 by Jean Demeste from the latin "spinella", or little thorn, due to its sharp octahedral crystals. In ancient times, exceptional large spinel crystals were mined in Southeast Asia, frequently becoming the treasured property of kings and emperors. In the United States, Spinel was recently added as an August birthstone, sharing this month with peridot and sardonyx. • Obsidian (pronounced ub-SIH-dee-in) is a natural glass that forms from volcanic activity. The gemstone is made of the same minerals as granite, but cooled so quickly that the minerals did not have time to crystallize. Obsidian is somewhat fragile, and is only slightly harder than window glass. It scratches easily and sharp blows can crack it. Do the lack of crystalline structure, it fractures in sharp curves, hence obsidian was used to make sharp tools as early as 21,000 B.C.Clear obsidian contains very few opaque impurities or microscopic mineral crystals. Other colors generally result from tiny crystals of feldspar, or inclusions of iron oxide or a wide variety of other minerals that may be present in volcanic flows. • Prehnite beads are also known as cape emerald beads and look extremely similar to green tourmalated quartz beads. Usually ranging from pale to grass green, prehnite can also be gray, white, black, brown or colorless. These semiprecious beads are hard, durable gemstones consisting of a hydrous silicate of alumina and lime. Their bright, almost luminescent coloring frequently features inclusions of black amphabole, which make them easy to confuse with green tourmalated quartz. Prehnite's luster is vitreous to waxy, and its crystals are transparent to mostly translucent. This gemstone is often found with zeolites, but the two stones are from different geologic classes. Other minerals confused with prehnite include gyrolite, smithsonite, and hemimorphite. Known as the "prediction stone", prehnite is believed to enhance dreaming and remembrance. Crystal healers use it to reduce high blood pressure and control hypertension. Please see the Related Products links below for similar items, and more information about this stone.

  • Rhodonite is an opaque, deep rosy pink to lavender gemstone with characteristic black veins called dendrites. Composed of manganese silicate, it makes a more durable gemstone than rhodochrosite, which is reactive to acids. Rhodonite, on the other hand, does not react to acids and is usually associated with black manganese minerals and pyrite. Most cleaning methods are safe for rhodonite (ultrasonic, etc), but like with all gemstones, avoid rough handling and extreme heat.Sometimes called the "the singer's stone," rhodonite is said to improve sound sensitivity. Many also believe it to help with the nervous system and self-esteem, and to balance trauma. It has long been considered a strong, feminine stone, as in the velvet glove over the iron fist. Natural healers associate rhodonite with the throat chakra (fifth), to help one achieve potential and dispel worry.
