  • Onyx is a striped, semiprecious variety of agate, with white, black, brown or red alternating bands. It is different from regular agate only in that the bands of which it is composed are parallel and regular. The name onyx originates from the Greek word onyx for "fingernail" or "hoof," probably because of its weak transparency or possibly its color. Onyx may chip or scratch rather easily, so store it carefully.Nearly all black onyx on the market has been rendered a uniform, permanent black color with a treatment using sugar and acid (and/or heat). This process has been used on the gemstone for thousands of years and is water safe.Onyx is one of the 12 stones mentioned in the Bible as adorning the breastplate of the high priests.Metaphysically, onyx is believed to help eliminate apathy, stress and neurological disorders, eliminate negative thinking, and sharpen the wits of the wearer. It is used to change habits, in addition to helping concentration levels and aiding absentmindedness. Some think it makes the wearer more eloquent, and thus it is worn for public speaking. The main sources of onyx are India and South America, but it is also found in China, Madagascar, Mexico and the U.S.A. • Turquoise has been revered for thousands of years. Its name means "Turkish stone" in French, a reference to where Persian material passed on its way to Europe. Turquoise is considerably softer than quartz, and is usually treated for stability. Chinese turquoise is generally stabilized using either wax treatment, resin stabilization and/or dye to improve the naturally soft stone's wearability. Most of our Chinese turquoise beads are mined and processed in the Hubei Province of mainland China. The gemstone occurs naturally in shades ranging from sky blue to grey-green, with varying amounts of brown and black matrix, usually in locations where the soil contains high concentrations of copper. • Emerald, May's birthstone, is a variety of the mineral beryl, colored green by trace amounts of chromium. In the United States, emeralds colored by vanadium are recognized as true emeralds, but in Europe, vanadium emeralds (sometimes called "Columbian Emeralds") are simply called "green beryl". Our beads are more likely to be chromium emeralds, but we are unable to confirm this. Bead-quality emeralds are almost guaranteed to be oiled, with either a natural or synthetic oil with refractive index close to that of an emerald. This improves clarity and stability. When cleaning emeralds of any quality, clean only with a soft cloth. Avoid tumblers, ultrasonic cleaners, and harsh chemicals. Please see the Related Products links below for similar items, and more information about this stone. • A shimmery stone with unusual properties, kyanite can become the sparkle in a necklace or the spark plug in an engine. This aluminum silicate is a polymorph with andalusite and sillimanite, meaning it shares the same chemistry, but has a different crystal structure. Kyanite is commonly a deep blue, similar to sapphire, and is named from the Greek word kyanos for "dark blue." It is sometimes called "sappare." The color is not always uniform; it can be blotchy or streaky. The crystals are transparent to translucent, and are found in long blades or columns. Kyanite forms during regional metamorphism under elevated temperatures and pressures, in rocks such as gneiss and schist. While most minerals have just one hardness, kyanite has a range of 4.5-6.5; the hardness varies depending on which way the stone is scratched (because kyanite's crystals are so long and thin). Kyanite is seldom faceted due to difficulties in cutting, and remains an unusual collector's gem. See Related Products links (below) for similar items and additional jewelry-making supplies that are often used with this item. While legends exist of Roman soldiers wearing this "all seeing" stone for protection in battle, tigereye was not considered a semiprecious gemstone until the late 19th century. Today, tigereye beads are some of our gemstone best sellers! The stone is also known as African cat's eye, crocidolite, and tiger's eye, and was once even called griqualandite, named after Griqualand West in Africa, where the finest examples of the stone were mined.Protect tigereye jewelry components from scratches, sharp blows, and large temperature changes. • Amazonite is a rare blue-green variety of microcline (a feldspar mineral) used as a semiprecious stone. Amazonite (sometimes called Amazon Stone) is an opaque stone, often found with white, yellow or gray inclusions and a silky luster or silvery sheen. It takes a relatively good polish, but still maintains a somewhat raw, natural texture that makes these beads even more appealing to many people. Its name is derived from the Amazon River, although no deposits have been found there. It is mined primarily in Russia, the USA (Colorado), Madagascar, Namibia, Zimbabwe, and Australia. Amazonite should be cleaned in lukewarm soapy water, never with a steamer or ultrasonic cleaner. Abrasives, acids and other chemicals can damage amazonite, as can scratches and sharp blows. Amazonite is believed to have many healing characteristics, including improving your skin, marriage, clarity of thought, and social interaction. It is also credited with alleviating muscle spasms, stress, and exhaustion. Even when polished, amazonite beads maintain a somewhat raw, natural texture that makes this pale blue-green stone even more appealing to many people.
