  • Onyx is a striped, semiprecious variety of agate, with white, black, brown or red alternating bands. It is different from regular agate only in that the bands of which it is composed are parallel and regular. The name onyx originates from the Greek word onyx for "fingernail" or "hoof," probably because of its weak transparency or possibly its color. Onyx may chip or scratch rather easily, so store it carefully.Nearly all black onyx on the market has been rendered a uniform, permanent black color with a treatment using sugar and acid (and/or heat). This process has been used on the gemstone for thousands of years and is water safe.Onyx is one of the 12 stones mentioned in the Bible as adorning the breastplate of the high priests.Metaphysically, onyx is believed to help eliminate apathy, stress and neurological disorders, eliminate negative thinking, and sharpen the wits of the wearer. It is used to change habits, in addition to helping concentration levels and aiding absentmindedness. Some think it makes the wearer more eloquent, and thus it is worn for public speaking. The main sources of onyx are India and South America, but it is also found in China, Madagascar, Mexico and the U.S.A. • Druzy: The stunning visual appeal of druzy beads and pendants makes them great options for jewelry focals. Sometimes spelled druse or drusy, druzy is a layer of fine crystals that forms on the inner surfaces of geodes and rock fractures over millions of years. Druzy most commonly forms as clear quartz crystals, but can also be composed of amethyst, citrine, calcite or other crystalline minerals. In the case of our druzy beads, these crystals (usually quartz) are frequently in the cracks and open spaces in various layers of agates. Druzy can be enhanced to change its color, including by electroplating or vacuum coating (processes that bond a thin layer of metal, often iridescent, to the surface of the crystal or the surface of the bead). Drusy is delicate, and is best suited for applications like pendants, earrings and pins that will not receive a lot of wear. When used in bracelets, remind your customers to treat the bracelet with care. To clean, use warm, soapy water and a soft brush. Drusy quartz rates 7 on Moh's Scale of Hardness; to avoid scratching your other jewelry, gently wrap druzy in fabric when storing it. See below for more info and similar items.

While these stunning semiprecious beads offer wonderful patterns in shades of rusty red, ochre, taupe and gray, the name is descriptive. Red creek jasper isn't an actual jasper, but a softer gemstone which should be treated with care. Mineralogical testing has not yet determined the chemical makeup of these gemstone beads. Nevertheless, their unique mix of warm and cool tones pairs well with both copper and silver, making these beads very versatile. Red creek jasper is said to be named after a stream that runs through the area of China where the gemstone was discovered. • Sunstone beads consist of feldspar crystals that were formed in molten lava, then discharged onto the surface of the earth by volcanic eruptions. As the lava weathers away or is broken up, the crystals are released. This semiprecious gemstone is also known as aventurine orthoclase, heliolite, or aventurine feldspar, and it varies in color from golden to orange to red-brown. Sunstone beads can be transparent or translucent, and can provide metallic glints due to sparkling inclusions. These semiprecious beads are believed to strengthen life force, bring luck, instill optimism, and increase vitality. Sunstone is also thought to bring luck and romance to the wearer, and is believed to help liver and kidney health. Red and brown shades of Sunstone are believed to activate the root chakra, and gold and orange shades are identified with the sacral chakra. • Azure Agate: Our azure agate beads are darker blue than many azure agate beads on the market. They are a vivid mix of indigo, cobalt blue, white, black, translucent gray and occasionally some red-browns. Some of the beads have dark blue or black spots like evil eye beads. Like other Fired Agate, the rich blues in these semi-precious beads are achieved via a combination of heat and dyes. The color goes great with new blue jeans, and is an economical alternative to lapis lazuli. The shades of blues found in strands of azure agate can be used for either the throat chakra or brow chakra (or, for classic WOW players, completing a quest in the Arathi Highlands). • Moonstone: With its ghostly glow, this feldspar stone almost seems magical. High-quality rainbow moonstone is usually chatoyant and sometimes displays a strong cat's eye. The floating-light phenomenon and sheen of moonstone are called adularescence or schiller. The light is scattered by alternating layers of two kinds of feldspar and produces a misty luster of white, dull yellow, yellow-gray or greenish-gray, or peach. Incipient cleavage cracks often are visible inside the gemstone. Rainbow moonstone is a close relative of labradorite. It can be confused with selenite gypsum, but while selenite is very soft and can be scratched with a fingernail, moonstone is relatively hard. Moonstone is the birthstone for June in Europe, and in the United States it shares that distinction with alexandrite and pearl. • LabradoriteLabradorite beads and pendants offer striking rainbow-colored reflections when light hits them from a particular direction. The labradorescence, or schiller, in these semiprecious beads and pendants offers the same stunning visual effect created by gasoline on water, or light on the delicate wings of tropical butterflies. Also known as black moonstone, falcon's eye, and labordite, this semiprecious gemstone is a sodium-rich variety of plagioclase feldspar found in igneous or metamorphic rocks. It is in the same gemstone family as moonstone and spectrolite (a high-quality labradorite mined in Finland). Labradorite is believed to detoxify the body, slow the aging process, elevate consciousness, and protect a person's aura. Many say the stone heals mental confusion and indecision. Please see the Related Products links below for similar items, and more information about this stone.

  • Amazonite is a relatively rare blue-green variety of microcline (a feldspar mineral) used as a semiprecious stone. This opaque stone has a silky luster or silvery sheen and is often found with white, yellow or gray inclusions. Amazonite, sometimes called Amazon stone, is believed to have many healing characteristics, including improving your skin, marriage, clarity of thought, and social interaction. • Brownish smoky quartz beads are almost always cut from rock crystal quartz that has been heat-treated to produce this coveted color (ours included). Tones of smoky quartz range from yellowish to deep translucent brown. Good specimens of natural untreated smoky quartz do exist, but are difficult to find. Smoky quartz semiprecious beads are also known in the market as cairngorm, Colorado diamond, morion, radium diamond, and smoky citrine. In Sri Lanka, many quartz varieties are called "topaz," including smoky quartz (which is called smoky topaz). The dealers are usually not intending to mislead, but when they say "topaz" they simply mean quartz. Smoky quartz is believed to help ground oneself and remove negativity. It is said to enhance survival instincts, and help wearers reach personal and business goals. Some say smoky quartz is also good for dealing with hyperactivity and attention-deficit disorder. • Tigereye Beads come in richly chatoyant browns and yellows with a golden luster. While legends exist of Roman soldiers wearing this "all seeing" stone for protection in battle, tigereye was not considered a semiprecious gemstone until the late 19th century. Today, tigereye beads are some of our gemstone best sellers! The stone is also known as African cat's eye, crocidolite, and tiger's eye, and was once even called griqualandite, named after Griqualand West in Africa, where the finest examples of the stone were mined.Protect tigereye jewelry components from scratches, sharp blows, and large temperature changes. Because of their chatoyance, tigereye beads and pendants should not be cleaned with alcohol or abrasives. It can be helpful to treat the stone with oils like Goo Gone.
