  • Strawberry vs. Cherry quartz: Sometimes cherry "quartz" (a pretty pink imitation gemstone) is erroneously called strawberry quartz. You can see the difference between the two gemstones if you look closely (you may need a loupe or magnifier). Cherry quartz is very consistent in shape, has a lighter color, and swirls of the types that you see in handmade glass beads, plus occasionally has small air bubbles. Strawberry quartz is a true variety of quartz, with tiny grains of red hematite speckled throughout the quartz, and may have small pits in the edges of the beads. Find related items below, and find out more about quartz in our Gemstone Index. • Peach Moonstone: With its ghostly glow, this feldspar stone almost seems magical. High-quality rainbow moonstone is usually chatoyant and sometimes displays a strong cat's eye. The floating-light phenomenon and sheen of moonstone are called adularescence or schiller. The light is scattered by alternating layers of two kinds of feldspar and produces a misty luster. Incipient cleavage cracks often are visible inside the gemstone. Rainbow moonstone is a close relative of labradorite. Moonstone is the birthstone for June in Europe, and in the United States it shares that distinction with alexandrite and pearl. Please see the Related Products links below for similar items, and more information about this stone. Peach Moonstone: With its ghostly glow, this feldspar stone almost seems magical. • Amethyst is the most highly prized variety of quartz, and if not for its widespread availability, would be very expensive. With its luscious purple color, it is the official birthstone for February and one of our best-selling gemstones. The stone's name is derived from the Greek word amethystos, meaning "not drunken," because people of ancient times believed it to protect the wearer from drunkenness. Some amethysts will lose their color in sunlight, so when they aren't being worn, store them away from direct exposure to help maintain their rich purple. Amethyst and other rich shades of violet are popular for the crown chakra. Amethyst is said to instill high ideals and urge one to do what is right. These semiprecious beads are also said to cure impatience, balance high energy, eliminate chaos, and help keep one grounded. Please see the Related Products links below for similar items, and more information about this stone. • A shimmery stone with unusual properties, kyanite can become the sparkle in a necklace or the spark plug in an engine. This aluminum silicate is a polymorph with andalusite and sillimanite, meaning it shares the same chemistry, but has a different crystal structure. Kyanite is commonly a deep blue, similar to sapphire, and is named from the Greek word kyanos for "dark blue." It is sometimes called "sappare." The color is not always uniform; it can be blotchy or streaky. The crystals are transparent to translucent, and are found in long blades or columns. Kyanite forms during regional metamorphism under elevated temperatures and pressures, in rocks such as gneiss and schist. While most minerals have just one hardness, kyanite has a range of 4.5-6.5; the hardness varies depending on which way the stone is scratched (because kyanite's crystals are so long and thin). Kyanite is seldom faceted due to difficulties in cutting, and remains an unusual collector's gem. • Eagle Eye (Jasper?): It's difficult to find reliable information on Eagle Eye. We were told it's jasper, but it has hints of shimmer and translucence that don't normally occur in jaspers. Is it feldspar (like moonstone and labradorite)? Is it a gray form of tigereye? Is it magical Toads Eye (aka toadstone)? Is it Hawk's Eye (the name for an earlier form of tigereye)? Whatever it is, our current batch of Eagle Eye beads are striped like tigereye or tiger iron, and these stripes of light and dark gray have a chatoyant shimmer, but don't have the full cat's-eye effect. Many of the stripes are parallel, and some are swirled. If it is simply gray tigereye, then the stripes are oriented fibers of crocidolite (a mineral of the amphibole group) that have been replaced by silica. Please see the Related Products links below for similar items, and more information about this stone. Eagle Eye (Jasper?): It's difficult to find reliable information on Eagle Eye. • Iolite: This silicate mineral (cordierite) can occur as crystals or grains in igneous rocks, as a result of aluminous sediment in magma. Also known as water sapphires, dichroite, Spanish lazulite, and Vikings' compass, the transparent purple-blue variety of this stone is iolite, named after the Greek word for violet, ios. Iolite beads and stones are known for their extreme pleochroism, or ability to change colors depending from which angle you look at them. While this semiprecious gemstone has a nice Mohs hardness of 7-7.5, it should be protected from harsh blows due to its distinct cleavage in one direction. This lovely purple gemstone is said to open and expand psychic talents, and is supposed to be excellent for use on the third eye and crown chakras. It also is believed to enhance curiosity, stimulate visions, and help the wearer deal with addictions, including alcoholism (assisting in detoxification as well as maintaining sobriety). Not always available. Please see the Related Products links below for similar items. • Turquoise has been revered for thousands of years. Its name means "Turkish stone" in French, a reference to where Persian material passed on its way to Europe. Turquoise is considerably softer than quartz, and is usually treated for stability. Chinese turquoise is generally stabilized using either wax treatment, resin stabilization and/or dye to improve the naturally soft stone's wearability. This gemstone occurs naturally in shades ranging from sky blue to grey-green, usually in locations where the soil contains high concentrations of copper. • Add elegance to a wide variety of jewelry designs -- pearls are perfect for formal occasions such as bridal jewelry, weddings and proms, and are equally at home in light-hearted beach-inspired jewelry. Pearls are organic gemstones, formed when a foreign object (like a tiny stone) makes its way into an oyster (or similar mollusk's) shell. Over time, the mollusk covers the intruding object with 1,000's of layers of nacre. "Cultured" pearls are pearls in which people, rather than nature, implant the foreign particle, and care for the mollusks at a pearl farm while the pearls develop. Nearly all pearls available today are cultured. Natural pearls are very rare (and valuable!), so the word "pearl" should be assumed as "cultured pearl" unless otherwise noted. Pearls formed by saltwater oysters are commonly known as oriental pearls and those produced by freshwater mollusks are called freshwater pearls.Pearls are perhaps the most popular and well-known birthstone for June. Use a single pearl drop, or a whole strand! See Related Products links (below) for similar items and additional jewelry-making supplies that are often used with this item.
