Shop faux Tortoiseshell charms, jewelry-making components and hair combs for creating DIY jewelry and custom hair accessories.
Tortoiseshell (or tortoise shell) has been used in jewelry and hair accessories for over 2,000 years. The hawksbill sea turtle, now a Critically Endangered species according to the IUCN Red List, was a worldwide favorite for hair accessories and eyeglass frames, due to its attractive coloration and patterning, light weight, and warm feel. Due to the scarcity and popularity of genuine tortoiseshell, imitations have also been popular since the early 1900's. It's still popular today, even though many of us have never seen genuine tortoiseshell in our lives (except perhaps on a tortoise in a zoo, or an artifact in a museum).
