4x4x0.75" square steel anvil block. Finely ground, polished top for clean easy work. This multipurpose jewelry making tool is a great size to use as a metal stamping base. Use it to hammer wire work, Art Clay™ Silver, or other metalwork to work harden. Hint: label and use one side for stamping and texture hammering, and the other side for flattening with rubber or rawhide mallets, so you always have a smooth surface for finishing work.
The size of this block is great, and it is hefty. I noticed that it is easier to get good impressions than my small 1/2" thick block. However, the surface of this block is not smooth, but rather it has more of a brushed finish. It leaves significant fine scratches on the back of the pieces I've stamped, making it impossible to stamp on both sides and creating more difficult finishing work for me.
Unfortunately, I've used it and managed to give it a small nick, otherwise I would return it. This is the type of problem you don't know about until you've used the tool. I will be investing in a better 4" block.
