White Jade beads are actually a type of serpentine. Semiprecious serpentine gemstones are translucent, waxy silicates of magnesium which often come in shades of green and have historically been confused with types of jade. Serpentine, however, is softer and less dense than most true jade. This makes it easy to carve, hence its popularity for unusually pretty carved beads. Serpentine is said to restore self-confidence, dispel fear, and enhance meditation.
