Bengal Blue Necklace & Earrings Tutorial
Create this necklace using easy bezel setting skills and jump ring attachment at filigree intersections. The sparkling allure of Swarovski Indicolite combines with the intricacy of brass filigree, as a nod to India's stunning, architectural details.
Created by: Megan Holden
Start with setting your 3 cushion stones in their settings (a 12mm stone for the necklace, and 2 10mm for the earrings). Gently but firmly use your burnishing tool to secure the prongs over your cushion stones and set aside.
Remove a 9mm ring from the Antiqued Brass Ring/Connector Chain.
Cut the foot of 2.8mm Antiqued Brass Flattened Cable Chain, precisely in half and attach one half to the lobster clasp with a jump ring, and use another jump ring to connect the other half to the 9mm ring that you removed from the Antiqued Brass Ring/Connector Chain. Set aside.
For step-by-step illustrated instructions on setting crystal stones in prong settings and crown settings, see Rings & Things' blog.
Lay out the 14 filigree drops using the photo provided as a reference, and note that at some junctures, the filigrees are inverted to provide uniformity and cohesion for how the finished necklace will hang.
Attach the remaining jump rings at the intersections shown in the picture, taking care to attach double rings for the 12mm bezel's corner loops, to accommodate its weight as well as to provide fortification and design to the focal gem.
Attach each of the corners of the finished chevron-esque filigree assembly to each of the free ends of the 6 inch sections of 2.8mm flattened cable chain, with jump rings.
Finish the necklace by using each of the ball end headpins: thread one pearl, one bead cap and one 4mm Indicolite Swarovski round onto each headpin, cut away excess wire to leave approximately 0.4" to make a loop, and attach to the bottom of the filigree assembly to create bottom "fringe"; repeat for each headpin and refer to picture of finished design for placement.
Attach each of the 10mm bezeled cushion stones to the pair of leverback ear wires. Then using two more of the headpins, place a pearl on each headpin and cut off ball and excess wire to leave approximately 0.4" of wire on each side of the pearl, to create a loop on each side, attaching one of these loops to the empty bezel loop (not attached to the leverback) and then finally, hang each of the two remaining filigree drops to the other loop. Refer to the finished jewelry picture for direction and placement of the filigree loops for the earrings and refer to Jewelry Basics 101 sheet for questions regarding the basics of creating & closing loops.
