Black Lava Stone Beads: Earthy yet elegant, black lava stone beads are made from basalt, a type of igneous rock formed during volcanic eruptions. Due to their many holes and bubbles, lava stone beads add great texture, but not a lot of weight, to jewelry designs. Lava stone is naturally rough in texture, and our lava stone beads usually appear to have been treated with a paraffin wax to make them smooth to the touch - plain basalt would be rather abrasive!
Lava stone beads are a great base for essential oils, as well as Art Clay Silver paste and other Metal Clay pastes -- just be sure to burn off the waxy coating in a kiln first.
Don't have a kiln? For essential oils, you don't need to remove 100% of the waxy coating: you can burn off some with a torch, or bake the beads in a 250 F oven on a layer of foil for about 20 minutes (remove from the oven and wipe with a paper towel before they completely cool). Please follow all safety precautions when using either method.

Waxy coating not great for essentil oils use

by Joanne| 5/9/2018 0:00:00

I bought these lavastones to use for essential oil bracelets, but the waxy coating does not allow for good absorption of the oils. Otherwise, a good product at a good price.

Please don't carry lava beads with waxy coating

by Valerie V| 4/17/2019 0:00:00

Didn't see the need to cook in 250 oven before using a bunch in bracelets. Very disappointed. should come with a warning as just about everyone ordering these is probably planning on using them with essential oils.

Use hot water to remove the wax.

These beads are perfect for making aromatherapy jewelry that is so popular right now. To remove the wax coating, you only need to let them soak in a bowl of hot water, just below boiling, for about 5 minutes. Then remove from the water and wipe with a paper towel to get the wax off.
