Bloodstone is one of the traditional birthstones for March. This dark-green variety of chalcedony (quartz) is dotted with nodules of bright-red jasper. Polished sections therefore show red spots on a dark-green background, resembling drops of blood and inspiring its name. In ancient times, bloodstone was attributed with the power to stop hemorrhages at the merest touch. It was greatly prized in the Middle Ages, as the spots were thought to be the blood of Jesus Christ. For this reason, bloodstone was commonly used in sculptures representing martyrdom. True dendritic jade is olive green to blue-green nephrite with dark dendrites (branching, treelike structures). Like many of the jade beads on the market, we believe our Dendritic jade to be a form of serpentine. (The Chinese word for jade is applied to a variety of minerals, including nephrite, jadeite, serpentine, agate and quartz.). Blue Goldstone Also known as sandstone, goldstone is a shimmering manmade gemstone that can be flashy or elegant, depending on how you use it. All colors of goldstone beads (including this deep blue goldstone) are made of glass imbued with tiny copper inclusions.
