Art Clay™ Silver - Syringe Type

Handout #68-007-04

Back
[Directions]
Remove the orange cap from the syringe.
Attach the nozzle to the syringe.
With even pressure, push out the clay from the tip of the syringe and draw a design.
By using a syringe type, you can draw designs directly on dried pieces of clay type or paste type and create subtle patterns, which are much more difficult to produce using conventional materials.
Do not draw with the syringe on an ordinary sheet of paper. Draw only on paper from which the clay will detach easily after drying (such as wax paper for microwave ovens or a Teflon®-coated or other non-stick sheet).
After use, remove the nozzle and replace it with the orange cap to seal the tip of syringe.
The piece should be fired only after complete drying. Dry the piece for more than 24 hours at room temperature or for about 30 minutes at around 212°F. (Using a hair dryer would expedite the drying process.)

Temperature 1600°F 1562°F 1472°F
Holding Time 10 min. 20 min 30 min.

Firing
Place completely dried piece in the kiln. If you are firing more than two pieces, make sure the pieces are not touching each other.
Raise the kiln's temperature to 1472°F for 30 minutes, or 1600°F for 10 minutes.
Switch off the kiln. When the temperature falls below 1200°F, remove the piece from the kiln and cool it to room temperature.

Finishing
The surface of the fired piece will be white and matte due to crystallization of silver. But luster can be obtained by polishing. (e.g. with stainless brush, burnisher, buff polishing, file, sandpaper.)

Completing
The completed piece is pure silver (99.9%).

[Precautions]
Attach the nozzle firmly on the tip of the syringe. If it is too loose, the nozzle could come off when pushing out the clay.
The tip of the nozzle is delicate. Do not squeeze it on a hard surface.
After shaping or designing with the syringe, remove the nozzle, replace the orange cap, and store the syringe in a zipper bag.
After removing the nozzle, make sure to clean out the remaining clay. You may use the empty syringe that is included with Syringe Type A and B. Draw up a syringe of clean water, attach the nozzle, and empty the remaining clay into a Paste Type jar or a 35mm film canister. Cap tightly.
Rinse the clay out of the nozzle by dipping the nozzle into water and rinse it out by pulling water in and out of the syringe, applying a piston stroke.
Make sure to rinse completely. Leaving dried clay in the nozzle may ruin it.
Smoke and gas may emit during firing. Always be sure to ventilate the workroom.
This product and attachments are designed only for Art Clay™ SILVER work. Do not use for other purposes.
If case of contact with eyes or mouth, rinse with running water and consult a doctor.
Because the nozzle is a sharp object, do not point the nozzle of the syringe at a person's face, especially the eyes.
For various uses, you can select from the following packages.
SYRINGE TYPE A (standard set): a syringe type clay, a green (medium) nozzle and an empty syringe.
SYRINGE TYPE B (assorted nozzles set): a syringe type clay, 4 different types of nozzles (blue-small, green-medium, gray-large, and orange-ribbon) and an empty syringe.
BASIC SYRINGE : a syringe type clay with no attachments. Used as a refill with above types.
