Roses of One Garden

Artist: Sandra Cowan and Lori Bouchard (South Windsor, CT)
Honorable Mention, Polymer Clay

"Sandra's ... major challenge was making a piece as detailed and fragile as this, but sturdy enough to be practically worn as jewelry. She discovered [the solution] by creating an "antiquing" glaze from silver Premo! Sculpey® and Liquid Sculpey, [then] applying the glaze, baking for ten minutes, cooling and repeating the entire process eight times with each layer! Each layer is hand painted between each firing in the oven. There are 22 layers times eight firings between each layer from start to finish, so this piece was fired a total of 176 times. The piece is extremely stable and solid! (In between baking, this piece was very difficult to handle, as it was very fragile and still slightly malleable). She added swirls of sterling wire during the sculpting process to add some flash (notice the tiny detailed ladybug?).

"To finish this piece, Lori decided to add a hand painted silk scarf rather than more polymer or silver. It was a bit tricky to reign in the need to add a lot of details, as we wanted only a feel of complementary roses and leaves painted on, so as not to distract from the main focus of the piece, which is the polymer roses. The scarf was carefully hand painted with silk paints using original hand drawn designs and then sent to Texas for Sandy to attach the finished roses and to photograph it." — Sandra Cowan and Lori Bouchard
