“The design for this necklace didn't come to me until five months after I had purchased the beads. I'd pull them out, run them between my fingers, play with them, arrange them with other beads and findings, but I always put them away again, unsatisfied. I must have tried to incorporate that imperial purple jasper into a dozen or more different pendants, but I was never happy with them, so I'd inevitably take them all apart. When the idea for the design finally did come – out of the blue – the implementation of the idea wasn't nearly as protracted as its gestation had been. I worked on the necklace in one straight shot, in a matter of mere hours. I went with copper wire rather than my usual silver because it really pulled out the bronzy tones in the lighter pieces of jasper. I wanted to reflect symmetry in the piece – so the up coils point one way and the down coils the other. This meant I had to wire wrap half the coils backwards so that the leading wire came across the front of the bead in both directions. Simple as that sounds, I hadn't done it before, and it felt like learning basic wire coils from the beginning.” – Felicia Parsons
Polly’s Picks are designs our editor especially liked despite the fact that they did not win a formal prize. These designs are often simple, practical and/or whimsical examples of how to use Rings & Things components well.
