Lady from Shanghai

Artist: Deborah Anderson (San Jose, CA)
Honorable Mention, Polymer Clay

“My ethnic background is Chinese. A few years ago, I began collecting prints of old advertising posters and labels depicting Chinese women from the 1920s-1930s. The details and colors are exceptional. Many of these prints were destroyed when the Communists took over China years ago. Anyway, I was fortunate to obtain a few of these images and, since I am so fond of them, I decided to make a pendant with one of the images. I scanned the images on my computer and printed out a page on my inkjet printer using Epson glossy photo paper. I cut out one of the images and coated it with liquid Sculpey®, then placed the image down on a very thin sheet of translucent clay which was rolled through my pasta machine ...”

Deborah also hand mixed the frame’s clay, to get the great color match with the fancy adjustable nylon pendant cord. To add texture to the frame, she used a rubber stamp with a “deeply etched pattern” and inked it with black ink before pressing it into the clay.
