Chained Melody

Artist: Cindy Simpson (Leroy, IL)
Additional Top Pick, Mostly Metal

"I was a freelance commercial artist that dabbled in making a necklace for myself every once in a while. A series of bad events changed my life and I needed a way to help put food on the table and pay my bills. In between shows and keeping up with life, I spent several weeks making "Chained Melody." This has been my "transformation" piece. I love working with copper and the warmness of the metal. Copper is so underrated. This was my first experience working with liver of sulfur and it won't be my last. I love the effect that it gave the copper. The pendant is a heavy paper collage. I used mat board as a background, so it is very sturdy, and I sealed the back with a varnished copper leaf. I collect found objects and antique beads from flea markets and incorporate them into my work. As I looked at the piece after it was done I realized I had just formed the links of my life. Each one different, some very complex, others seemed sedate and easy to follow. Each piece we create is a small part of us and if we listen carefully it can tell us something very important about whom we are....it can "transform" us!" — Cindy Sampson

In making this piece, Cindy used copper footage chain, copper crimp tubes and copper wire.
