Spring Bucky Ball
Artist: Erika Fabricius (Minneapolis, MN)
Honorable Mention, Glass
"I first started making Bucky Balls one night at the end of 1999. In the years since then, I've added layers for structural integrity, and 90 crystals per ball for -- well -- sparkle! The four-layer balls tend to take me about 12 hours, although this one took more like 14 hours. I usually only use one, or maybe two or three colors of crystals, while this time I used 14 different colors of crystals, and carefully laid out the pattern before I started the final layer ..." — Erika Fabricius
Here at Rings & Things, we were very curious as to what a Bucky Ball was. Turns out it is a spherical form based on the structure of Buckminsterfullerene, a carbon configuration named after Buckminster Fuller, the scientist and architect who popularized the geodesic dome.
