Art Clay™ Silver / Grand Prize

Nouveau Experiment
Artist: Gordon K. Uyehara (Honolulu, HI)
Grand Prize/ First Place, Art Clay™ Silver
"This piece arose from the desire to combine sterling silver wire with low-fire Art Clay™ Silver 650 clay. Starting out as more of an experiment, my only two other design goals were to give it a nouveau feel and to give it some dimension. Adding design elements as I went along, the pendant evolved into its current configuration. To give it some length and to balance out the design, I got an idea to use some woven wire chain as a flexible tail. I built a tunnel for the tail and used a generous amount of paste to hold it in place. I worked on the piece over a two-week period, but never more than several hours at a time. The piece is brush-finished except for the round shapes, which are more polished. A patina was applied to bring out the detail. The double-knit Viking chain is finished with silver clay endcaps and a toggle clasp created out of square wire." — Gordon K. Uyehara
