Fall Floral Splash

"I love to garden, and often incorporate flowers and leaves into my pieces. [This] piece uses a depth of surface technique to give a look of layers, as I might see in my garden. The flowers are formed by millefiori canework, to create a chrysanthemum-style flower. The pin begins with a sheet of clay, with a thin layer of white clay. After curing, the leaves were drawn and colored with pencils and markers to create a background to the image. The cane slices were applied over the drawings, along with translucent clay, incorporating glitter and embossing powder, to add a touch of sparkle. The back and sides of the pin were added to finish the main form. After curing, carving or drilling, back filling adds and enhances details, and reinforces the depth to the surface. A pin back is added with a small sheet of clay and liquid sculpey. Sanding and buffing brings out the translucency of the clay." — Judy Dunn
