Untitled Drawstring Bag

Artist: Zephyr Del Pino (El Rito, NM)
First Place, Alternative Materials

Zephyr has made unique drawstring bags since 1978, using an antique hand-cranked sewing machine. She works in a stylish, solar-powered mobile home that takes her to art fairs throughout the western United States. Zephyr explains that "[m]y art and my nomadic lifestyle are intricately interwoven ... Everywhere I go, I gather materials to adorn my art and am especially intent on using the work of artist friends, such as gemstone-inlaid antler buttons and handmade ceramic pendants and beads." In this particular piece, Zephyr used an Asian coin charm and genuine coins to compliment a beautiful turquoise rectangle featured with black pigskin. The fringe and other embellishments include India brass bells along with various types of glass beads. The drawstring itself is standard-weight rattail.
