Checkered Face

Artist: Laurie Leonard (Jeanette, PA)
First Place, Found Objects & Miscellaneous

"The inspiration for this whimsical necklace was the combination of timeless black and white with the court-jester-like addition of the painted female face. It takes me about two days to make a necklace like this (not counting the painting) because of the drying time of the resin, which is done in layers. When I decided to create jewelry with miniature reproductions of my original watercolors, my first thought was to use a female face as a focal point. I think the hardest part of this necklace was choosing the beads on the bottom ... so many choices!" -- Laurie Leonard

Laurie describes her basic method as follows:

1. Cut the shapes out of the copper sheeting (or whatever metal you want).
2. Glue on any embellishments (bezel-set image, rhinestones, etc).
3. Carefully pour resin over the face of the metal to the edge.
4. Allow resin to dry, then drill holes and attach pieces together with jump rings.
5. Attach the [braided cotton] cord using center-crimp ends [with loop] and jump rings.
6. Add drop by wire wrapping the beads to the bottom of pendant."
7. Attach toggle clasp.

Other supplies Laurie used include David Christensen furnace glass beads, Czech glass E beads, head pins and a jeweler's saw. She suggests that the #46-302-52-0 bezel cup, or similar brass bezel cups, could be used instead of the rolled-edge brass bezel she used around her painted face.
