Hello I would like to know if I have to cover my work (art clay 650, and slow dry) with borax when I want to solder a sterling (925) piece on to it (like a broche pin or so)?

I always cover my complete work in borax (when working with 925) to stop oxygen biting deep in. But when I fire the clay I don't en yet when I go solder I do it as a habbit but suddenly wonder Is it nessecary??

Once your ACS work has been fired, it is fine silver. I treat fired pieces just as I would any metal that I am soldering together. It is true that the reason we coat the entire surface of a sterling silver piece is to prevent firescale, and fine silver does not have a firescale problem [neither does Argentium Sterling] but I still use a full fluxing method when silver soldering ACS work.
