Great books for getting started: Beader's Companion, by Judith Durant and Jean Campbell, or Stitching Beaded Jewelry: The Absolute Beginners Guide by Leslie Weiss

Supplies:
Needles
Nymo or SuperLon

Size (of needles, cord, and beads), plus the techniques and preferred materials vary by project type and teacher.
Beadweaving can seem very complicated at first.  I highly suggest you take a class from a local teacher, or at a beading conference, show or retreat -- just one class, and the tricky steps suddenly become clear, and you're ready to take on the projects in almost any book ... such as these other beadweaving books.

We have a few beadweaving projects in our archived project sheets. The styles might be dated since we posted them in 2003-2005, but they have nicely detailed illustrations and instructions.  You can also find a nice variety of sweet little tutorials by BeadAngel, linked in from posts in this Forum.
