I recently purchased dyed howlite beads - they were dyed to be the affordable lapis.  I did not realized that they were not permanently dyed and the description says I need to wash or apply an artist fixative.  Has anyone had experience with these beads and what have they done to keep the color from bleeding onto your skin or other beads? Help me, please.  This was suppose to be a necklace for my niece.

Sadly there are a couple of diferent dyes used on these and we are never sure which one without testing. At least one process is a long lasting dye while others washes off with water all too easily.

Put one or 2 beads in a clear glass of water and see if the color washes off.  If not try a "Q-Tip" dipped in acetone type fingernail polish. If it comes off with that and not with water it's one of the better dyes.  (Still can be affected by hair spray and perfumes and other things containing solvents.)

Hopefully some other readers can jump in with specific solutions (no pun intended) that worked for them.
