Silver-plated pins
«

I recently purchased some silver-plated kilt/skirt pins. A lady I know from my bowling league owns a pet boutique and asked me to make up some dog & cat themed jewelry. I used one of these pins for my samples and she loved it! My question is, how long does silver-plating usually last before it tarnishes? Also, can silver-plated be cleaned? I prefer sterling silver but apparently they only come in gold and silver plated.

For something that is heavily worn, like a ring, plating usually doesn't last long.
But gold- and silver-plated pins can last decades if treated well.
Since sterling silver tarnishes, and silver plate is a layer of fine silver, many items with a silver plate have an anti-tarnish lacquer added to help prevent tarnish. When this gets a sprinkling of other "finishes" like hair spray, there can be a spotted effect.
Chemicals such as hair spray and perfume sprays can damage the finish on plated jewelry, so the jewelry should be put on last.
