Here's a reply for anyone still curious.

You can use a product like Liver of Sulfur or a number of other acid based oxidizers.

Hey - sorry we missed your question.
When I get chain and want to oxidize it the first thing I do is knock the 'bright' polish off some. I do that by hand rubbing the chain with pumice powder - then rinse.  You can do this in a tumbler but make sure you bind you chain loosly in some way so that it doesn't get all tangled up in the tumbler.
Then I usually use Liver of Sulfur [not too hot so it works slow] and I dip into it and pull it out and check the color until it is where I like it.  You can use 'Silver Black but it is very fast and will make your chain black or dark grey almost instantly. Whatever I use, I tthen rinse and dry. I like a hand rubbed finish so I use the polishing cloths to rub up the finish on the chain. This can take a bit to get it back to a consistent finish.  I recommend exerimenting abit to work up you method before you start into that deadline based show piece.
