Megan - I use a method basically like yours, too.
Actually, I normally take pix on a wooden desk or shiny metal block and then make irritated sounds about how strange the color came out, or how much stronger the glare is in my photo than it was "in real life". THEN, I grab the white boards and re-situate the desk lamp, and try again.

Lol, so true. Photographing on wooden surfaces is a lot harder than it seems. Depending on the tone it can make all of your jewelry look yellow.
