Hi I am new here & I have never been on any Jewelry forums although I have been making jewelry for at least 6 years now.  I do not sell really as so many people do this & I do not consider my stuff that great anyway ( although I have been told other wise by others who have had things off me ).  I must admit there is something that I do need help with at the moment & that is Gold testing pens.  I have not long got one of these pens, the type you plug in then put a solution on the nib & rub on the gold or silver & depending what colour comes out on the nib & you being able to draw on white paper.  Then tells you what it is, now I have not done this on silver yet & although it had a colour chart.  When I have done this on gold it comes out as a dark red almost like a light purple, yet this colour is not on the chart.  Can anyone help me with this please.

Those pens and kits can be tricky, and part of the problem I THINK is, if the chemicals get old or are stored at high temps, the results can be off.

Also, I couldn't ever get a straight answer on whether they can detect the difference between real silver and silver plate, real gold and gold plate.

I actually only used them when I was buying and selling antique and vintage jewelry.  Now that I make my own, I rely on the integrity of my suppliers.  (Cue a round of applause for R&T here....)   41

I'm not sure if any of us have any experience with these testing pens. We'll have to ask around the warehouse and do some research.

Hi All.

Thank you for your replies, I appreciate them very much.  I must admit that I do hope that the chemicals are OK & that the system is OK as I paid $80 for them & that to me is a lot of money.  But if anyone else who may read this has any other information on these pens & the colour they give, I would be really thankful.
