My question is, can I make up some slip from a small amount of metal clay and use as paste or do I need to buy paste as well? Is there a significant difference?
I’d like to keep costs down as im just making a one off Christmas present.

Thanks

James - that is the way to go. There are uses for paste  like using it to coat leaves [nice project] but for a one off piece and all -
Your made up paste will work fine.
If you are building in inclusions [like sterling silver jump rings] I like to use Overlay Paste. it bonds well to fired metal surfaces.
