Maybe try making some faux stone and/or faux amber cabochons from polymer clay?

There are a number of great recipes and ideas out there (on the web, and in magazines like Bead & Button) for making quite realistic and/or attractive faux stones out of polymer clay.

To get odd sizes in cabs, you'll have to go to a bulk manufacturing supplier, which is good only if you can buy a lot. I was in the same quandary. Go to the AJM website (www.ajm-magazine.com). This is a trade magazine for manufacturers. They have a search engine for their advertisers.

For what it's worth, I've tracked down one source online:

http://www.grandmats.com/gpmetalcab.htm

They sell acrylic cabs.  Looks like you're right, not an easy item to find.  :icon_13:
