I think that 10mm round glass Czech beads might be the best item to use.  They are very regular in size, shape and hole size.  http://www.rings-things.com/Catalog_Pages/168.htm

8mm Czech rounds and wafers are available in more colors than the 10mm, so those would be good for the beads that have a little smaller hole.

I are currently making necklaces with large glass beads from Syria. They tend to have rather large holes - from 8mm to 10mm and I am mixing with 4mm Swarovski crystal beams.

What can I use to block the Syrian glass beads in position?
