I am not exactly sure how a crafter would do this- there might be some sort of transfer material out there- I would suggest browsing some DIY jewelry sites- and maybe posting this question on the Bead and Button forum. For some reason I did think there was an article about it in Jewelry Crafts magazine but I cannot find the issue.
For someone with a little dark room knowledge- there is something called "Liquid Emulsion". You can take this stuff and paint it onto any surface (ceramics do work best). Once it dries, it becomes similar to photo paper in that you can expose any image onto it and process it like you would a photograph.
The catch is- you have to have a dark room- this liquid cannot be exposed to light or it's ruined.
Again- I'm not sure this is how these are being created- but this is a good way to try- if your're properly equipped that is.

I agree with Mary, that the liquid emulsion + dark room is probably how these are made especially since its black and white photos. That is unless there is some new transfer type material I am unaware of.

hi, just having read your post. I'm wondering if it was done with polymer clay emulsion. I saw something similar on that's clever. and they transfered photo onto ceramic tile using polymer transfer emulsion. (looked like a clear thick liquid polymer clay) I don't see in their description that it is actually ceramic clay?? could the actual tile be a "polymer" clay? I do some pottery, and glass fusing, and have wanted to try some of the photo transferring but haven't gotten around to it yet. Wish I could tell you if i was successful.

The New Clay
mentions transfers with polymer clay. It says it will pick up images from newsprint and from drawings done on Tissue paper.
#85-302 Liquid Sculpey can be used to "make transfers from blackand white and color photocopies, color laser prints, and colored pencil drawings". You might check their website
www.sculpey.com
for more ideas and information.
