There are several good starter books. You can see them on our catalog page http://www.rings-things.com/Catalog_Pages/195.htm
My personal opinion would be one of these three:

Step by step Bead Stringing
Elizabeth Ward's Bead Stringing
and the more advanced
The Best Little Beading Book:  Techniques and More...
A Practical Guide for Bead Lovers

oops.... I just noticed that Step by step Bead Stringing does not show up on the on line catalog page... ahh it's out of print. You might find it at a local bead store.

So  I guess my pick is Elizabeth Ward's Bead Stringing.

On Monday I'll ask other staff to share their picks with you.

All the books give you suggestions for tools and the "best" ones depend on what you will be doing.
Round or needle nose pliers (or rosary pliers with a cutter on the side), Diagonal cutter or a wire clipper, needles, crimping pliers (if you use crimps), a split ring plier if you use split rings are among the basics.

Some of our cheapest tools are on page 214.

Better quality on page 215.

The set of 5 ergonomic tools at ว.75 are a good set if you expect to get serious about beading. OTOH, many people "make do" with tools they already own until they do a little actual beading .

I agree, I bought the E. Ward book to give to an elderly new beader, my mother.  She has had few troubles in following the instructions.
