We know your main concern is creating beautiful jewelry, not photographing it. However, if an image we receive doesn't sufficiently display an artwork's quality, our judges can't make a reliable determination. We want to make it easy on all of us! That's why we've developed a simplified version of the guidelines used by Zapplication (ZAPP), a technology project created by artist organization WESTAF, in association with the NAIA.
We're using a simplified version of ZAPP's requirements because we print rather than project entries for judging. If you choose to follow ZAPP's full guidelines, rather than our simplified version, your photos will be formatted to a standard used in art-fair juries and other contests, as well as providing the best image quality for us.
Our Image Requirements:
- For square images, a total size of 1920 pixels horizontal x 1920 pixels vertical
- For rectangular images, the larger dimension needs to total 1920 pixels
- Save as JPG file format
- Image file size of less than 1.8 MBs
- Digital images only (sent as an online attachment, or on CD)
You will need access to a camera with a minimum of 3.2 megapixels, or a 300 dpi (or higher) scanner, to comply with these requirements.
Image-making Tips & How-tos:
- Don't be scared! These technical requirements are not as difficult as they may sound. See Zapplication's imaging tips for in-depth information.
- Your piece should be well lit and in focus.
- Fill as much of your image space with your piece as possible.
- Avoid use of props or models.
- Avoid loud or distracting backgrounds. Neutral solid backgrounds, such as gray or white are preferable.
Don't Have Equipment for Professional-quality Images?
- Consider hiring a professional photographer to take your pictures. No matter the contest outcome, you'll always have a nice image of the piece for promotions, juries and your own records.
- Zapplication provides links to some professional photographers.
- Or, send us your piece. We will photograph your physical entry and return it to you the first week of April, or sooner. We are not liable for lost or damaged items (but we'll do our best to be careful!).
