Introduction to Metalworking

Next Class:
Friday, August 3, 2007
noon – 4 pm

With metalsmith, sculptor and ACS master instructor Kurt Madison

Join Kurt for this introduction to metalworking techniques — a workshop we've developed based on feedback from our soldering class. The workshop is an informal demonstration and talk that will focus on your interests! Bring your questions, tests and/or problems, and we'll see where the discussion leads. Plus, learn about new materials and techniques. If you've already done some work with metals, you can also gain help troubleshooting current pieces! The Complete Metalsmith by Tim McCreight will be a reference book for the class; Kurt will regularly refer to this text and others.

Class topics include:
  • Getting started — what basic tools do I need?
  • What's the difference between soft and hard soldering?
  • When did metalsmithing start, and how has it changed over time?
  • What are the best torches and methods for various types of projects?
  • What does "gold filled" mean? And what about other metals terminology?
  • What is a bezel setting and when would I use it?
  • How can I turn X, Y or Z into a pendant?
  • What are the best glues for glass and metal joints?
  • I've made some great stuff and now its time to get serious! ... What's my next step?

Kurt has taught for over 30 years, throughout the United States and in Scotland. He is one of only nine Art Clay Silver Master Instructors in the United States, and has won three Japanese honorable mentions for his work with metal clay. Don't miss this opportunity to work with Kurt, our resident metals expert! Plus, watch for Kurt's lecture "The Many Worlds of Overlay Paste" at the 2007 Metal Clay World Conference.
