R&T Employees Good at Getting Hit by Cars, Missed by Buses

Friday, January 8th, 2010
*Update: Attend a Complete Streets Spokane meeting, Wednesday January 13th from 5:30-7pm at the YMCA!
With a commute-alternative-loving company like ours, it’s not surprising that we have a broad range of experiences with alternative transportation.  You’re likely to find us walking, biking, riding the bus, or carpooling, both to save money and to help the environment. You’ll also find that an unusually large number of our employees have been hit by cars, or narrowly missed, while commuting to or from work.

We’re full of stories about our adventures dodging cars and chasing after buses…

Thank you, Mr. Bus Driver

Thank you, Mr. Bus Driver!

R&T owner Russ Nobbs is an avid user of commute alternatives. In the warmer months, he rides a recumbent bicycle. In the winter, he walks or rides the bus.

Earlier this week, Russ missed the bus.

In his own words:

“It was a dark and rainy night, Monday evening.  The #45 leaving downtown at 7:20pm stopped at Goodwill on 3rd for a passenger.  At the next bus stop to the East, the driver passed me by even though I had my arm out trying to wave him down.  I was standing at the stop in front of the church, near the light.  True, I was wearing a dark leather jacket and true, the driver was visiting with a passenger standing behind him.

The East Fifth bus behind the 45 did stop for me, tried to reach the driver of the 45 by radio and failed.  I got off the East Fifth at Arthur and walked the rest of the way up to 13th.

I’d not mention this incident except that it is not uncommon to wave the 45 down in this area.  Another regular rider who gets on at the Goodwill stop wears a bright yellow jacket for night visibility.  She’s experienced the driver missing her entirely at the Goodwill stop.  I’ve had to step out and wave the 45 down at both the Goodwill stop and the next stop to the East.

I suspect the evening runs may not have a lot of riders getting on the bus in the area beyond Division and therefore the drivers are not very attentive in that area.  I’m writing this in hopes that the drivers can be encouraged to watch for riders in this area as well as the more populous areas.  Those of us who work late need the bus, particularly on dark and rainy nights.”

Russ sent his account to Susan Millbank, the Spokane Transit Authority Ombudsman.  Susan responded immediately, offering R&T free safety flashers to make our employees visible at night.  We asked for a small number to pass out to those most likely to need them.  They were personally dropped off by Terri, an STA employee.  We were pleasantly surprised to discover that instead of the dozen flashers we were expecting, the box contained 100 safety flashers!

Now that’s service.  Thanks, STA!

So if you’re out on the road in the Spokane area this winter, you may be a little less likely to hit (or miss!) the employees of R&T.

Rings & Things is a “Bicycle Friendly Business”

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

Thanks for the recognition!

My other car is a *real* bike!

My other car is a *real* bike!

The League of American Bicyclists recently announced 45 new Bicycle-Friendly Business (BFB) award winners, including Rings & Things. This was the third time BFB winners have been announced since the program’s inception in 2008, when the League announced the first 13 designees; it puts us in the ranks of businesses like Rodale Publishing, REI stores, and the World Bank.

BFB businesses make bicycle-friendliness a core element in the workplace, and use innovative tools to promote bicycling as an easy and fun option for transportation and recreation.

The BFB program recognizes socially responsible businesses that promote healthy, happy, and green workplaces, and provides a road map to become even more bike-friendly in the years to come.

BFB winners provide amenities such as secure bike parking and shower facilities, and motivations such as incentives to commute by bike and bike to Work Week promotions. When bicycling is infused in a company’s culture, great things happen: reduced health care costs; more productive employees; improved worker and customer satisfaction; smaller carbon footprint; and increased corporate social responsibility. It’s also fun to bike :)

Applying as a BFB is easy and free. Applicants receive technical assistance from the League staff as well as tools to evaluate and assess their bicycle friendliness through the application process.  Rings & Things encourages other businesses to make a difference by supporting employee bicycling.

Now that winter is safely over…

…we’re able to share this cool alternative-commuting story.

When our town was socked by a record blizzard this last December, Rings & Things people took it in stride.  A modified, snowshoe-y stride.  When other business were closed, we were tromping through the snowdrifts to bring you beads.  Watch a local TV station’s story about our whitish-green commuting!

Nice Earth Day present: a “worksite bike”!

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

Happy Earth Day! Rings & Things has been awarded a brand-new bike for employees to use for errands during the day.

Spokane mayor, Mary Verner, presented select participants in Washington state’s Commute Trip Reduction program with their new Worksite Bicycles on Earth Day.  For its voluntary participation in the CTR program (and with 96% of employees taking part!), Rings & Things received one of these fine bikes.

Ten local workplaces were given commuter bikes in The Chase Gallery, just outside the City Council Chambers.  A whole package of items was presented to each business:

  • A durable new Giant “Sedona ST” bicycle, built for comfort and “heads up” riding
  • A Bell “Venture” adjustable-fit safety helmet
  • A Kryptonite U-Lock/Flex Cable key-lock security locking system
  • A bicycle tire pump with gauge for maintaining proper tire pressure

In a nice bit of recognition, Rings & Things’ diligent Employee Transportation Coordinator, Selina Shehan, was interviewed by two TV stations, KHQ (in a story headlined “Spokane Residents Live a Little More ‘Green’ “) and KXLY.  View and read more at their websites!

We’d like to recognize the other workplaces who were honored yesterday:

  • CH2M Hill
  • Coffman Engineers
  • Goodwill Industries
  • Red Lion Hotels
  • Riverpoint Parking & Transportation Services
  • Spokane Regional Transportation Council (SRTC)
  • The Spokesman-Review
  • Sterling Savings Bank
  • Spokane City Hall

How did you celebrate Earth Day — with special beads, designs, promotions or activities?  Share in a comment below!

Green = SMART (awards) at Rings & Things

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

Since I wrote the other day about “greening our commute” at Rings & Things, I though it would be fun to share more good news…

s_m_a_r_t_decalRings & Things is in the first group of businesses certified by the City of Spokane, Washington for their implementation of green and sustainable management practices.  The Spokane supplier of beads and jewelry components was awarded certification in the categories of Waste Reduction and of Transportation, as part of the city’s SMART Program.

Rings & Things gained recognition for its ongoing efforts to divert as much material as possible from the waste stream both in its warehouse and at community events, as well as for its award-winning Commute Trip Reduction (CTR) program.

The SMART (Sustainable Management of Assets, Resources and Technology) Business Recognition Program is designed to encourage Spokane businesses to adopt policies and practices that encourage good management of financial, built, natural and human capital.  The program was developed by the City’s Business & Development Services Department in partnership with Avista, Eastern Washington University, and the Washington State Department of Ecology.

“When we asked businesses what we could do to encourage them to adopt these practices, they told us that they needed help marketing their commitment to sustainability to their customers,” says Mayor Mary Verner. “More and more people want to do business with companies that share their commitment to protecting the environment and resources.”

Under the program, businesses can apply to be recognized at either a “participant” or “certified” level in a variety of categories, including energy efficiency, waste reduction and recycling, renewable energy, water conservation, green building, transportation/commute trip reduction, and pollution prevention. Businesses also can seek special “innovation” recognition in each of the categories.

“We hope people will see this as a seal of approval for these businesses,” the Mayor says. “We see it as an additional opportunity to grow our green economy.”

This is the only such program in Eastern Washington and third statewide. The other programs are in Kirkland and Olympia.  The City will accept applications later this year from other businesses who want to seek this recognition. A more detailed program description is available on the City’s web site.

Rings & Things encourages other businesses to apply for recognition in this program.

The image above shows a SMART program decal that we now display at our warehouse, which says:

Spokane Sustainable Business
—- Certified —-
* Transportation * Waste Reduction * ”

Greening our commute

Monday, February 9th, 2009

09_pinnacle_11At Rings & Things, we actively promote commuting alternatives through “Trippin’ to R&T” and the Commute Trip Reduction (CTR) program, using tools such as http://www.mycommute.org.  We and our stellar Employee Transportation Coordinator, Selina Shehan (at center in the photo), have won a variety of awards for our commitment to “greening” our workers’ commutes.

If we could share a few highlights, they’d include these:

  • January 2009: Selina Shehan and Rings & Things win a second “Way to Go!” Pinnacle award. The Pinnacle Award is given to just three employers in our state each year, based on innovative trip reduction strategies, ETC commitment and participation, continued enhancement of their CTR program and management support.
  • September 2008: Rings & Things receives the Washington state Governor’s Award for Outstanding Achievement by a Voluntary Employer in the CTR program.
  • January 2007: 2006 Pinnacle Award.
  • September 2006: September All Star Coach, Selina Shehan.

From time to time we’ll share other tidbits about our efforts to make Rings & Things and our industry the greenest they can be.  You might be surprised by some of what we say.  Stay tuned to learn what I mean by this!

Have ideas for “green” beads, findings, advertising or business practices?  Share them through the Replies section below!
