Jewelry Design Gallery Tricks

June 12, 2012

Hi bloglandia! It has been awhile! I’ve been busy preparing our summer catalog (set to hit mailboxes early July). Once again it features lots of fun new beads, jewelry findings and mixed-media supplies. Our design team puts in a lot of work to create jewelry that fits with current trends and also helps illustrate how different products might be used. Sometimes it just isn’t so obvious how that little hook with crimp, or whatever it might be, could tie into a design!

Spring Skies

Spring Skies necklace featuring blue lace agate, Vintaj natural brass, feathery chain and the Bohemian Rhapsody mix of SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS crystal bicones.

We integrated our design gallery with our online store to make it easier for you to purchase the supplies for designs you like. However, we soon discovered a drawback: while it is easy to browse the jewelry designs, it is somewhat difficult to find one in particular. If you search for the name of a jewelry piece, our website brings back zero results (so sad!).

But – there is an upside. If you search for a certain stock number, you can now find jewelry designs that use that product! This is really exciting, to me at least.

For example, say you are looking at different types of clasps. You find hook and eye clasps on p. 273 of our main catalog and wonder if they’d really look right on your jewelry. Here’s how to find a design that uses those clasps:

1. Go to www.rings-things.com.

2. Enter the base stock number (39-293) in the search box and you’ll see all the colors of that clasp, AND:

RT Design Gallery 1
Several of the category results up top are the names of jewelry designs. Sweet!

3. Let’s click on Spring Skies.
Rings & Things Design Gallery 2

Wait, where is the necklace? Hold on a sec. We are looking at the exact clasp used on that necklace – but the necklace itself is nowhere to be seen.

4. Click into the product details.

Rings & Things Design Gallery 3 Same clasp, but now look above the product to see the category we’re in…Spring Skies!

5. Click the Spring Skies text link.
Rings & Things Design Gallery 4
And voila! At long last we’ve arrived in at the design gallery listing for the Spring Skies necklace. Here you’ll find tips on how to make this piece, links to popular (and free!) jewelry-making technique sheets as well as all the products you need to create this design.

Obviously, we’ve got thousands of products and not all of them are going to have designs (I said our design team works hard – but we do have to sleep sometime!). Searching for just the base stock number (with many exceptions, the rule is that the final -# designates the color or plating of a family of items) will increase your odds of finding example jewelry that shows exactly what you are looking to find! Also, just take a look at those top category search results from time to time to see if anything intriguing pops up – it might lead you to a whole new look!

Happy designing! Please feel free to leave a comment if you have any questions about our design gallery or website in general. ~ Cindy

The 2011-2012 bead catalog from Rings & Things

Wednesday, January 19th, 2011: Jewelry supplier Rings & Things has published a new two-year catalog that’s one for the record books. Everything about this 2011-2012 bead catalog—its range of new beads and findings, number of jewelry designs and more—reaches new heights.

At 457 pages, this new bead catalog provides more browsing, shopping and inspiration than ever. Extra space is allocated for extra product-usage hints, tips on Rings & Things’ services, and design suggestions—all in a new, lighter catalog!

The 310 designs almost double the previous catalog’s offering. All kinds of jewelry and accessories are illustrated in these free jewelry ideas: not just necklaces, earrings and bracelets, but also specialized pieces like zipper pulls, sleeve pendants, and belt buckles.

Featured new items include many Rings & Things exclusives. Lampwork glass beads are hot, from sugar skulls to mushrooms to candy corn. Hinged picture-frame pendants superbly showcase treasured memories, collages and photos. Ring blanks with flat pads for ornamentation are an easy “glue and go” jewelry project.

Further exciting additions to the bead supplier’s line of beads and findings adorn every section of the catalog.
Steampunk cogs and bezels keep gaining steam. SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS crystal filigrees, some with three rhinestone colors, dazzle while unique boxwood
ojime beads fascinate with exquisite handcarved detail.

Thousands more items await bead-loving readers, who can receive this free bead catalog when placing an order with Rings & Things (otherwise $5 postage paid). Orders and catalog requests are accepted online at http://www.rings-things.com/catalog.html; by phone M-F 8-5 Pacific, (800) 366-2156.

How to find large-hole beads

February 9, 2010

Here’s a great little tip on tracking down large-holed beads

On page 491 of R&T’s Super Supplement 2010, we share a cool search feature for finding large-hole ‘beadable’ beads on our online store.

When only a large-hole bead will do

When only a large-hole bead will do

Just enter “BFMB” in the search box; this will currently bring up 325 items, from crow beads to ring beads to genuine coins, that have been identified as fitting* on our line of beadable products.

(Beadables include pens, cheese knives, bookmarks and more — all of them customizable with your choice of beads.)

In case you are wondering, BFMB stands for “Beadable Finding Mandrel Beads”.

*Some beads, particularly the large-hole gemstone beads, may still require a bit of reaming.

We've still got it (a charms catalog, that is)!

January 23, 2009

If you’ve just received our nice new catalog, you may have looked in it for charms. There are some in there, but for “hard copy” types, the real gold mine is our separate, free Charms Catalog:

Rings & Things' new catalog brings exciting changes

January 15, 2009

The 2009-2010 Rings & Things catalog, improved by feedback from…you!

Rings & Things introduces exciting changes with our newest two-year catalog, hitting mailboxes as we speak. This 2009-2010 edition features numerous improvements. These were based on feedback from countless loyal customers (hi there!):

  • It weighs 29% less than the previous edition, saving not only postage but fuel consumption for transport.
  • It’s half as thick as the previous one, allowing the use of less packaging for shipment.
  • The catalog content has actually increased, from 377 to 400 pages. Free jewelry designs have more than tripled, and there are now 10% more products.
  • Colored tabs mark each section of the catalog (for example Gemstones; Swarovski® Crystal; etc.) for quick access. Each section also has an informative cover page.

As always, our catalog is available for $5 (US), or for free with your order. (More info on ordering our catalogs.)

Thanks for helping make this our best catalog yet! When you receive yours, log in below and tell us what you think.

Update: We’re hearing nice things on Twitter about the new catalog. Thanks @fabfibers @jlyarnworks!

New catalog, new gemstone prices

October 31, 2008

As you know, Rings & Things puts out a catalog every 2 years. (Our 2009-2010 catalog is coming in the New Year!) Part of the catalog-production process is to review and revise prices as needed.

For the last two catalogs–that’s 4 years–we chose to not raise gemstone prices across the board but rather “eat” vendor price increases we received over the years. Unfortunately this year we are forced to implement a price increase for most gemstone beads.

The reasons for the price increase are varied:

  • Lack of “rough” material means higher prices for finished gemstones. Gemstones are not a renewable resource.
  • Competition for high-demand gemstones has increased prices.
  • Vendors have given us multiple price increases over the years.
  • The US dollar has lost exchange value compared to the Chinese Yuan (RMB).
  • Inbound freight cost has increased over 15%.
  • China, where most gemstones are processed, has implemented three cost-of-living minimum-wage increases for its workers.
  • New EPA-style laws in China raised our prices.
  • China has changed their tax laws, which caused an increase in prices.
  • Our desire to maintain a higher-quality gemstone than some of our competitors requires us to seek out new vendor sources at higher prices.

The average price increase is about $1.25 per strand at wholesale price–but many items went up only 25 to 50 cents. A few items have had a larger price increase due to the multiple vendor price increases we’ve received over the last four years.

We appreciate your business over the last several years, and our commitment is to continue delivering you the highest-quality gemstone beads at the best prices we can. We think you’ll see and appreciate the difference as always!
