  • Gemstone rondelles (also called roundelles and roundels) are a wonderfully versatile gemstone bead shape. Use the smaller sizes as spacer beads and the larger sizes as colorful focal beads and/or textural interest. Smooth varieties are wonderful for showing off the natural markings of the various stones, while faceted varieties offer even more polished sparkle!
  • Bicones are sometimes called rondels or rondelles, but they are more conical that the shape that most of us think of as a rondelle. Our bicones are faceted, similar to crystal bicone beads.
  • Saucer (or flying saucer) beads are a thinner rondelle or bicone, almost a disk or heishi shape.
  • Don't miss out on large-hole roundelle beads (with a 2-2.5mm hole), perfect with add-a-bead components and larger jewelry cording (like leather, 2mm cotton, and hemp cord). We try to keep some "guy-friendly" gemstone colors in the large-hole rondelles, as well as some unusual geometric shapes.

Sometimes we have a few faceted wheel beads in this category too.

  • Onyx is a striped, semiprecious variety of agate, with white, black, brown or red alternating bands. It is different from regular agate only in that the bands of which it is composed are parallel and regular. The name onyx originates from the Greek word onyx for "fingernail" or "hoof," probably because of its weak transparency or possibly its color. Onyx may chip or scratch rather easily, so store it carefully.Nearly all black onyx on the market has been rendered a uniform, permanent black color with a treatment using sugar and acid (and/or heat). This process has been used on the gemstone for thousands of years and is water safe.Onyx is one of the 12 stones mentioned in the Bible as adorning the breastplate of the high priests.Metaphysically, onyx is believed to help eliminate apathy, stress and neurological disorders, eliminate negative thinking, and sharpen the wits of the wearer. It is used to change habits, in addition to helping concentration levels and aiding absentmindedness. Some think it makes the wearer more eloquent, and thus it is worn for public speaking. The main sources of onyx are India and South America, but it is also found in China, Madagascar, Mexico and the U.S.A. • Terra Agate: No gemstone is more creatively striped by nature than agate. This distinct and dramatically banded variety of chalcedony is composed of quartz layers, which varies greatly and can be of many colors. Each individual agate forms by filling a cavity in a host rock. As a result, agate is often found as a round nodule with concentric bands like the rings of a tree trunk. Terra Agate begins naturally like any other agate, and is then enhanced with a combination of heat treatment, permanent dye, sanding and laser etching, similar to Dzi-style agate beads. The combination of translucent and opaque agate swirls in shades of blue-green, with additional etched and fired patterns is beautiful! • Cacoxenite by itself is an iron aluminium phosphate mineral associated with iron mining. It has a silky luster, and a hexagonal crystalline structure that grows in a radial pattern. When it forms within amethyst and other forms of quartz, it displays as yellow to reddish orange (and occasionally green) needles, strands, tufts and layered inclusions. The name comes from the Greek words for "bad" and "guest" because the phosphorus in cacoxenite causes problems when smelting iron ore. However, in the world of gemstone healing, it's highly valued: It is believed to raise spiritual awareness with cacoxenite's high vibration. When cacoxenite forms within purple amethyst, it is considered to be highly regenerative, and is associated with the third eye and crown chakras. When it forms within clear quartz, it is associated with the third chakra. In both forms, it is believed to be an amplifier for positive thought processes, and beneficial for increasing intuition. • Reddish-rust colored goldstone beads offer a brilliant flash with inclusions of copper crystals! Sometimes mistaken for orange-colored sunstone beads, these gemstone beads are actually manmade from glass with added copper salts. Through a unique cooling process, the copper salts turn into copper crystals, creating semiprecious beads with a special gleam. The name "goldstone" comes from the story that the gemstone was created when Italian monks tried making gold out of base ingredients (alchemy). Goldstone is believed to store the energy of those who touch it, making it an excellent gift for loved ones who are far away. • Picasso marble offer muted and masculine colors with an earthy edge. Like all forms of marble, Picasso marble (aka Picasso jasper and Picasso stone) comes from limestone. It was formed when magma covered limestone fields during prehistoric times. As heat and pressure forced the magma through fractures in the limestone, it painted the material with gray and tan colors streaked with black lines. The resulting patterns are dramatic and abstract, like some of Pablo Picasso's artwork - thus the name of this semiprecious gemstone.Picasso marble is fairly new to the bead market but has been used by Zuni fetish carvers for some time. It is said to help discover the cause of past imbalances, aid in circulation problems, and increase the body's metabolism (causing weight loss). Some believe that Picasso marble beads and pendants transform intuition into intellectual thought and renew old friendships that have been lost. • Amethyst Gemstone Beads and Pendants: Amethyst is the most highly prized variety of quartz and if not for its widespread availability, would be very expensive. With its luscious color, it is the official birthstone for February and one of our best-selling gemstones. Amethyst is formed in silica-rich liquids deposited in gas cavities (geodes) in lava. It occurs in crystalline masses, but the crystals are generally not well developed, so they are generally found as clusters of crystal points. Though geodes are the best place to find amethysts, they also sometimes grow as stalactites. The stone's name is derived from the Greek word amethystos, meaning "not drunken," because people of ancient times believed it to protect the wearer from drunkenness. Please see the Related Products links below for similar items, and more information about this stone. • Black Lava Stone Beads: Earthy yet elegant, black lava stone beads are made from basalt, a type of igneous rock formed during volcanic eruptions. Due to their many holes and bubbles, lava stone beads add great texture, but not a lot of weight, to jewelry designs. Lava stone is naturally rough in texture, and our lava stone beads usually appear to have been treated with a paraffin wax to make them smooth to the touch - plain basalt would be rather abrasive!Lava stone beads are a great base for essential oils, as well as Art Clay Silver paste and other Metal Clay pastes -- just be sure to burn off the waxy coating in a kiln first.Don't have a kiln? For essential oils, you don't need to remove 100% of the waxy coating: you can burn off some with a torch, or bake the beads in a 250 F oven on a layer of foil for about 20 minutes (remove from the oven and wipe with a paper towel before they completely cool). Please follow all safety precautions when using either method. Please see the Related Products links below for similar items, and more information about this stone.

  • Obsidian (pronounced ub-SIH-dee-in) is a natural glass that forms from volcanic activity. The gemstone is made of the same minerals as granite, but cooled so quickly that the minerals did not have time to crystallize. Obsidian is somewhat fragile, and is only slightly harder than window glass. It scratches easily and sharp blows can crack it. Do the lack of crystalline structure, it fractures in sharp curves, hence obsidian was used to make sharp tools as early as 21,000 B.C.Clear obsidian contains very few opaque impurities or microscopic mineral crystals. Other colors generally result from tiny crystals of feldspar, or inclusions of iron oxide or a wide variety of other minerals that may be present in volcanic flows.
