These beaded belts / sashes / hangings are created by Ibo and Yoruba artists in Nigeria. They are generally made with seed beads, over a padded cloth backing. Some are lined with cowrie shells (symbol of status and femininity) and some have tassels. Various patterns beaded onto these "belts" depict faces, human figures, fish, turtles, birds, frogs, snakes and crocodiles. Often facial features, and sometimes entire animals, are three dimensional. These are great purchases for personal collections, and also for generating or accommodating customer interest in unique cultural art.
