Just a heads up: We have 100's of some colors and sizes of these bright colors of vinyl coming from Africa. However some colors (red in particular) and some sizes are quickly selling out. If you are developing a line with this material please be aware that some may not be available when we sell through our original purchase.
We carry a full line of African beads, both old trade beads, and newer beads made or strung in Africa for the world-wide bead trade. Trade beads are old and/or used beads, and will show varying amounts of wear. Newly-made African beads are generally handmade in small communities. Style and availability vary. For more general information pertaining to trade beads try these recommended books. For specific reading regarding different types try the Picard books. We also carry the popular World on a String film series on DVD. These 5 volumes go into great detail regarding beads and their history.
Approximately 3mm vinyl heishi trade beads, 0.7mm thick. 1000-1500 beads per 34-36" strands (approximately 35 beads per inch). Also known as plastic heishi. May contain other heishi colors. Dye lots also may vary per strand. These heishi were most likely made in Europe and exported to West Africa for trade. Originally made from vulcanized rubber. These are not, however, made from record albums.
