  • Cubic zirconias are synthetic (manmade) gemstones. Like diamonds and natural zircons, cubic zirconias have a very high refractive index, which translates to high amounts of sparkle.CZs are extremely durable and can withstand high temperatures. Most colors can be fired in kilns with metal clay, a process that ruins most other gemstones. The gemological properties of CZs vary by manufacturer due to variances in the type and amount of stablizer used to make isometric (cubic) crystals. After controlled annealing to ensure the flawless crystals are stable, CZs are cut into faceted gemstones. You can safely clean your cubic zirconias with any jewelry cleaner or detergent. Be sure to rinse well to avoid leaving a residue that would dull the gem's shine.Questions? E-mail us for friendly, expert help! Cubic zirconias are synthetic (manmade) gemstones. • Onyx is a striped, semiprecious variety of agate, with white, black, brown or red alternating bands. It is different from regular agate only in that the bands of which it is composed are parallel and regular. The name onyx originates from the Greek word onyx for "fingernail" or "hoof," probably because of its weak transparency or possibly its color. Onyx may chip or scratch rather easily, so store it carefully.Nearly all black onyx on the market has been rendered a uniform, permanent black color with a treatment using sugar and acid (and/or heat). This process has been used on the gemstone for thousands of years and is water safe.Onyx is one of the 12 stones mentioned in the Bible as adorning the breastplate of the high priests.Metaphysically, onyx is believed to help eliminate apathy, stress and neurological disorders, eliminate negative thinking, and sharpen the wits of the wearer. It is used to change habits, in addition to helping concentration levels and aiding absentmindedness. Some think it makes the wearer more eloquent, and thus it is worn for public speaking. The main sources of onyx are India and South America, but it is also found in China, Madagascar, Mexico and the U.S.A. See Related Products tab for products and projects that go with this item.

  • Opalite (Opalized "Quartz") is also known as moonstone quartz, opalized quartz, and sea opal. These "gemstone" beads are actually glass. They are distinguishable from natural semiprecious stones by occasional, accidental bubble inclusions and a lower resistance to scratches and breakage. Nevertheless, manmade opalite is beautiful, and it is cut, faceted, and polished just like any other gemstone. Opalite beads have a cloudy center and few visible inclusions. They project a blue sheen when worn against most colors, but take on a yellowish tinge when placed next to white. • Agate: No gemstone is more creatively striped by nature than agate. This distinct and dramatically banded variety of chalcedony is composed of quartz layers. This composition varies greatly and can be of many colors. The other chalcedony family, jasper, has less-regular patterns and is less defined than the agates. Another difference between the two is that agates tend to be translucent (or at least contain translucent bands), while jaspers are generally opaque. This distinction stems from agate being composed of microscopic "fibers" of crystalline quartz while jasper is made of microscopic "grains" of crystalline quartz. Each individual agate forms by filling a cavity in a host rock. As a result, agate is often found as a round nodule with concentric bands like the rings of a tree trunk. Agate is said to be named for the place it first was found — along the River Achates (now called the River Drillo) in Sicily. In ancient times, agate was highly valued as a talisman or amulet. It was said to quench thirst and protect from fever. Persian magicians used agate to divert storms. Some believed that agate would render the wearer invisible, and due to its strength and durability, it is used for making ornaments or for astrological purposes. Agate is a cooling stone and is said to cure insomnia, protect against danger, promote strength and healing, and ensure a healthy life. The major sources of agate are Australia, Canada, Mexico and the U.S.A. The gemstones of Minnesota (Lake Superior agate) and South Dakota (Fairburn agate) are agates. • Turquoise has been revered for thousands of years. Its name means "Turkish stone" in French, a reference to where Persian material passed on its way to Europe. Turquoise is considerably softer than quartz, and is usually treated for stability. Chinese turquoise is generally stabilized using either wax treatment, resin stabilization and/or dye to improve the naturally soft stone's wearability. Most of our Chinese turquoise beads are mined and processed in the Hubei Province of mainland China. The gemstone occurs naturally in shades ranging from sky blue to grey-green, with varying amounts of brown and black matrix, usually in locations where the soil contains high concentrations of copper. While these stunning semiprecious beads offer wonderful patterns in shades of rusty red, ochre, taupe and gray, the name is descriptive. Red creek jasper isn't an actual jasper, but a softer gemstone which should be treated with care. Mineralogical testing has not yet determined the chemical makeup of these gemstone beads. Nevertheless, their unique mix of warm and cool tones pairs well with both copper and silver, making these beads very versatile. Red creek jasper is said to be named after a stream that runs through the area of China where the gemstone was discovered. Most cleaning methods are safe for rhodonite (ultrasonic, etc), but like with all gemstones, avoid rough handling and extreme heat. Sometimes called the "the singer's stone," rhodonite is said to improve sound sensitivity. Many also believe it to help with the nervous system and self-esteem, and to balance trauma. It has long been considered a strong, feminine stone, as in the velvet glove over the iron fist. Natural healers associate rhodonite with the throat chakra (fifth), to help one achieve potential and dispel worry. This distinct and dramatically banded variety of chalcedony is composed of quartz layers, which varies greatly and can be of many colors. Each individual agate forms by filling a cavity in a host rock. As a result, agate is often found as a round nodule with concentric bands like the rings of a tree trunk. Terra Agate begins naturally like any other agate, and is then enhanced with a combination of heat treatment, permanent dye, sanding and laser etching, similar to Dzi-style agate beads. The combination of translucent and opaque agate swirls in shades of blue-green, with additional etched and fired patterns is beautiful! • Black Lava Stone Beads: Earthy yet elegant, black lava stone beads are made from basalt, a type of igneous rock formed during volcanic eruptions. Due to their many holes and bubbles, lava stone beads add great texture, but not a lot of weight, to jewelry designs. Lava stone is naturally rough in texture, and our lava stone beads usually appear to have been treated with a paraffin wax to make them smooth to the touch - plain basalt would be rather abrasive!Lava stone beads are a great base for essential oils, as well as Art Clay Silver paste and other Metal Clay pastes -- just be sure to burn off the waxy coating in a kiln first.Don't have a kiln? For essential oils, you don't need to remove 100% of the waxy coating: you can burn off some with a torch, or bake the beads in a 250 F oven on a layer of foil for about 20 minutes (remove from the oven and wipe with a paper towel before they completely cool). Please follow all safety precautions when using either method. Please see the Related Products links below for similar items, and more information about this stone. • Please see the Related Products links below for similar items, and more information about this stone. *Blue goldstone beads look like they've captured a clear midnight sky full of stars! As with all forms of goldstone, this manmade gemstone is created from glass combined with copper salts. Through a special cooling process, the copper salts in the navy blue glass transform into copper crystals creating the unique sparkle of these semiprecious beads and jewelry components. Regarded as a protection mineral, blue goldstone is considered a good deflector of unwanted energies. This synthetic gemstone is reported to have been first created when Italian monks were attempting alchemy (the creation of gold from base materials) - thus the name "goldstone." Blue goldstone components work great in a number of jewelry styles, including formal wear in which brighter colors of original goldstone might appear too showy.

It is clearly a "reconstituted" or "block" type of gemstone, which means it is a mixture of resin, dyes, and potentially some gemstone content -- in this case, leftover/recycled calcite from other stone cutting projects. It seems durable and colorfast (it won't leak onto your customer's clothes), and we just loved the color selection so much that we couldn't pass it up. We encourage you to use it and love it too, just please don't try to pass off "block" gemstone beads like these, as natural or genuine gemstones. Pearls are organic gemstones, formed when a foreign object (like a tiny stone) makes its way into an oyster (or similar mollusk's) shell. Over time, the mollusk covers the intruding object with 1,000's of layers of nacre. "Cultured" pearls are pearls in which people, rather than nature, implant the foreign particle, and care for the mollusks at a pearl farm while the pearls develop. Nearly all pearls available today are cultured. Natural pearls are very rare (and valuable!), so the word "pearl" should be assumed as "cultured pearl" unless otherwise noted. Pearls formed by saltwater oysters are commonly known as oriental pearls and those produced by freshwater mollusks are called freshwater pearls.Pearls are perhaps the most popular and well-known birthstone for June. While legends exist of Roman soldiers wearing this "all seeing" stone for protection in battle, tigereye was not considered a semiprecious gemstone until the late 19th century. Today, tigereye beads are some of our gemstone best sellers! The stone is also known as African cat's eye, crocidolite, and tiger's eye, and was once even called griqualandite, named after Griqualand West in Africa, where the finest examples of the stone were mined.Protect tigereye jewelry components from scratches, sharp blows, and large temperature changes. Because of their chatoyance, tigereye beads and pendants should not be cleaned with alcohol or abrasives. It can be helpful to treat the stone with oils like Goo Gone. See Related Products links below for more info about this stone, plus products frequently used with this item. Agate: No gemstone is more creatively striped by nature than agate. • Red creek jasper beads are also known as Chinese picasso beads, reed picasso beads, and red cherry creek jasper beads. • Tigereye Beads come in richly chatoyant browns and yellows with a golden luster. • LabradoriteLabradorite beads and pendants offer striking rainbow-colored reflections when light hits them from a particular direction. The labradorescence, or schiller, in these semiprecious beads and pendants offers the same stunning visual effect created by gasoline on water, or light on the delicate wings of tropical butterflies. Also known as black moonstone, falcon's eye, and labordite, this semiprecious gemstone is a sodium-rich variety of plagioclase feldspar found in igneous or metamorphic rocks. It is in the same gemstone family as moonstone and spectrolite (a high-quality labradorite mined in Finland). Labradorite is believed to detoxify the body, slow the aging process, elevate consciousness, and protect a person's aura. Many say the stone heals mental confusion and indecision. Please see the Related Products links below for similar items, and more information about this stone.

  • Terra Agate: No gemstone is more creatively striped by nature than agate. • Amethyst is the most highly prized variety of quartz and if not for its widespread availability, would be very expensive. With its luscious purple color, it is the official birthstone for February and one of our best-selling gemstones. The stone's name is derived from the Greek word amethystos, meaning "not drunken," because people of ancient times believed it to protect the wearer from drunkenness. Some amethysts will lose their color in sunlight, so when they aren't being worn, store them away from direct exposure to help maintain their rich purple.Amethyst and other rich shades of violet are popular for the crown chakra. Amethyst is said to instill high ideals and urge one to do what is right. These semiprecious beads are also said to cure impatience, balance high energy, eliminate chaos, and help keep one grounded.
