These brass figurines are made in small African villages using traditional metalsmithing methods. Most of them are new, three-dimensional castings. Each brass figure is unique, giving it added aesthetic and artistic value (this also means that size, shape, and detailing will vary). Some of these pieces are replica "goldweights," elaborate brass weights used to measure gold in the historic African gold trade. Reproduction goldweights are made from hand-shaped wax patterns from a village near Kumasi, Ghana.
